Elsie Ilene Scherle was born on July 25, 1935, the only child of George and Agnes Scherle (nee Kellen) who farmed northwest of Serath, SK. Elsie was baptized and later confirmed in the Serath-Elbourne Lutheran Church and attended grade and high school in that area. She later continued her studies in nursing training at the Regina General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as an RN in 1958. She then earned her BScN degree at the University of Alberta in 1968. After returning to Regina, she worked in several departments at the RGH, including labor and delivery, surgery, and the burn unit.
In 1986, Elsie and her father moved to Regina Beach, where she became very active in the community. She helped start and maintain a foot clinic, was Chairperson of the Regina Beach Housing Authority, was a member of the Arts and Crafts Association and the Leisure Time Club. She was a founding member of the Last Mountain Lake Cultural Centre, the Lakeside Heritage Museum and the South Shore Art Guild. Elsie enjoyed playing bridge, doing handcrafts and painting, but most of all, traveling.
The Last Mountain Lake Cultural Centre and the Regina Beach community are deeply indebted to Elsie for her vision and help in obtaining, moving, renovating, expanding, and maintaining our current building.
Elsie passed away on December 31, 2006
The portrait of Elsie was made by friend and artist Ward Schell. It hangs permanently in the entryway of the Centre.
